The Jimma region is home to one of the very last remaining rainforests in all of Ethiopia. Nano Challa sits in this Jimma region where coffee grows wild protected by the forests. The heirloom coffee varieties from Ethiopia hold 99% of genetic material in comparison to other varieties. This ensures complexity is off the charts! The microclimates of the rainforest produce incredible tea-like qualities that are exploding with a variety of fruit notes.
First off I must say, that I am definitely biased towards Ethiopian coffees, and this coffee is no exception! Halfwit did a masterful job roasting this coffee! Too many times when I see coffees with these kind of flavor profiles, they don't typically taste that great as an espresso, and are more suited towards a V60 or other pour overs. They're usually too light and come off sour, or over roasted and lacking complexity. Not this coffee! It's equally impressive as an espresso, and as a V60. It's an aromatic and flavor tactical nuke! It targets complex smells and tastes of Japanese Honeysuckle, with a light twist of lemon with unbelievable precision. It has subtle strawberry infused tea flavors, and finishes with a lingering marshmallow sweetness. I love this coffee, and I feel like I notice new flavors every time I pull a shot of espresso, or brew a pour over. Slight changes in extraction time, temperature, and filter baskets, bring new dimensions to this coffee. Below is my favorite espresso extraction specs, and as a V60, I found Halfwits recommendation perfect!
